NAAMA NextGen National Summit
The NAAMA NextGen Annual National Summit is a hallmark event for the Arab-American community. It aims to connect the NAAMA NextGen community as well as educate and empower aspiring healthcare professionals in the context of the Arab American identity. Founded in 2018 – the summit has grown to host over 200 students and many esteemed speakers such as medical school deans, CNN correspondents, medical school admissions staff, prominent researchers, hospital department chairs, and chief executives of major hospital systems.
Keys for Syrian Kids
What began as a piano concert in 2016 developed into an annual event that has fundraised over $200,000 benefitting Syrian Refugee children through UNICEF. Piano Keys for Syrian Kids was founded by twin brothers Omar and Ziad Fehmi and marked the beginning of NAAMA’s official partnership with UNICEF USA.
Students for Yemen
In the fall of 2020 student organizations had to engage their members virtually for the first time. Simultaneously, the Yemen crisis raged on as the most brutal humanitarian crisis in history. Students for Yemen provided 44 student organizations step-by-step instructions to engage their members in a social media fundraising and awareness campaign. The project was founded and led by Omar Fehmi with organizing committee members Abdullah Hashsham, Megan Bowman, and Mariam Tobia. It supported 3 sub-events, resulted in 440 educational instagram posts, and fundraised over $20,000 in small donations for the children of Yemen through UNICEF.
COVID-19 Town Hall Series
In the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic there was a desperate need for reputable information regarding COVID-19. The COVID-19 Town Hall Series consisted of 5 webinars with renown international experts covering topics including physician perspectives, student life & mental health, vaccination, public health perspectives, and burnout. The series was founded and led by Omar Fehmi with UNICEF UNITE Detroit and NAAMA NextGen UMich. The events averaged 200 registrants hailing from 19 different states and 16 different countries.
Soccer for Syria
An annual summer soccer tournament benefitting Syrian Refugee Children through UNICEF! The most recent event in 2021 brought together over 150 students to play soccer, eat shawarma, and fundraise a total of over $5,000 to help Syrian kids who need it most.
Cycle for Obesity
A part of the NAAMA NextGen Obesity Research project, Cycle for Obesity was a total of three free cycling classes taking place in Bloomfield Hills Michigan, Atlanta Georgia, and Houston Texas. The events aimed to inform the NAAMA NextGen Obesity project and raise awareness for healthy behaviors in the Arab American population.
SPAAC
NAAMA members participated in the 2018 edition of the American University of Beirut (AUB) SPAAC Program. The SPAAC program gathers students between the age of 14-18 from around the world and offers the opportunity to learn about Lebanon’s rich history and culture. The program was successful and our members returned with amazing memories and experiences.
